Welcome back to campus to everyone who's moved in and settled! Before classes start, we have an awesome event coming up on Monday, September 6th. From 2 - 4pm, join us at Centennial Quad for a cultural extravaganza:

Xplosaic: Exploring Our Cultural Mosaic

Witness and celebrate NU's cultural diversity with fun activities & free give-aways; listen to music, watch dances, and enjoy some tasty food from around the world (and the block)!

*In case of rain, the event will be held in Matthews Arena.

It's all brought to you by the Asian American Center, International Student and Scholar Institute, John D. O'Bryant African American Institute, Latino/a Student Cultural Center, and Spiritual Life Center.

Eyyyy everyone!

We hope you're all doing well and enjoying the last bits of summer. Can you believe how quickly it's gone by?

Just this past weekend PAAC had its annual retreat at a YMCA camp in Beckett, MA, where representatives from the eight PAAC groups gathered for a weekend filled with informative workshops, fun games, and great team-building tasks. This year we strove for self-awareness within and networking amongst the attendees, and through various activities, we managed to accomplish our two major goals. Above all, we had fun while doing it and everyone in attendance tried something new!

Thanh Ly- VSA

Hi everyone! My name is Thanh Ly and I am your Co-president for the Vietnamese Student Association this '10-'11 year. I am a Behavioral Neuroscience major and an East Asian Studies with a Chinese track minor. I'm not sure which year I am at Northeastern because I transfer to Northeastern during my sophomore year. All I know is that I could potentially be a middler/junior. I'm mix Chinese and Vietnamese. My favorite color is blue, but I sometimes cheat and play around with purple and black. I love food, sometimes I like to describe myself as a pregnant lady in disguise, because one I can eat so much when I want to and I have random food craving. I love the game "Harvest Moon". You get to experiences the "pimping" system. Where you befriend all the girls/guys and go on dates with them. My dream is to one day go to Asia become a comedian and participate on game-shows. Oh! I also can't keep a facial expression for more than 30 seconds and sometimes I like to change it up (my picture) a bit.

I hope you all enjoy reading my bio and don't find me intimidating. Don't be afraid to approach me if you see me. I seriously don't bite unless there is food involve.

Aileen Salle- VSA

Hello world! My name is Aileen Salle and I am co-President of the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA). As a rising junior of Northeastern University I have already had about 2 years' worth of eboard experience. As a sophomore, I was the secretary for Barkada as well as Program Coordinator for the VSA. Last year, as a middler, I was the Treasurer for the VSA. Not only have I been involved with that, but while I'm in classes, I am a work study at both the Asian American Center (AAC) and the International Student and Scholar Institute (ISSI).

From July-December, I am on co-op at the Hartford Financial Group at their Boston office right near the Public Garden. It's been fantastic so far and I enjoy taking a leisurely stroll home from work everyday. (I walk everywhere. It's great exercise!) After my co-op, I'll resume my studies in marketing and accounting (most likely somewhere in Dodge).

Oh yea, even though I'm co-President for VSA, I'm not Vietnamese. Actually, I'm 100% Filipino! I enjoy cooking some Filipino foods like adobo, nilaga, lumpia, turron, and hopefully soon I'll be able to make some bangin' leche flan!

Thomas Kim- PDPsi

Thomas is a fourth year majoring in Accounting and Finance, from Long Island, New York. He has been involved in Pi Delta Psi for 3 years and has followed NUPAAC since his second semester at Northeastern University. He plans on improving Pi Delta Psi's campus presence during the fall 2010 school year through more cultural events and working with PAAC groups. He always loves to try new things and get to know more people. Recently he has been learning how to cook, playing the piano, going to the gym regularly, and following more sports. He loves performance and is always looking for opportunities at open mics for beatbox.

PAAC Changes and Updates

Hi everyone,

We hope your summer is going well, whether on co-op, in classes, or vacationing.

However, we have an important update in regards to this year's PAAC: Katey Toy will be stepping down as this year's PAAC Co-Chair. It was an extremely difficult decision for her to make, but she felt it would be hard for her to fully commit to PAAC on top of her many other duties. We'll miss Katey and we wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors!

So joining Andy as 2010-2011's other PAAC Co-Chair will be Cindy Wong.

Cindy is a third year biology student from Boston, MA. This past year she was an At-Large Representative for PAAC, as well as the Logistics Chair for the Boston Asian American Student Intercollegiate Conference. She enjoys bike (and scooter) riding, dancing, and playing sports. Cindy is excited to help lead PAAC to an amazing and successful year!

I’ve lived in the Boston area my entire life, and this city is very close to my heart. These past 2 years as a member and Treasurer of UTSAV have been incredible as I’ve learned so much and enjoyed some exciting events. I look forward to working with PAAC this next year and meeting you all!

I’ve always enjoyed kicking back with friends and family, listening to new music and just having a good time. I’m an avid sports fan (BOSTON represent!) and I’m always up for meeting new people.

I live in Staten Island, NY, but Boston is like a second home to me! I have learned and experienced so much this past year as a Freshman with KASA and I hope to continue in its success. If theirs anything that I have enjoyed, it was dancing with the KASA dance group as we rocked it during such events like DANCE FOR ME and CELEBRASIAN.

Outside of KASA, I enjoy studying and walks on the beach....YEAH OK. (walks on the beach are nice though) So seriously, I really enjoy playing volleyball, meeting new people, and just going out and having memories. I am very excited for this upcoming year and I hope to see ya'll soon!

We're a social and service organization with a strong alumni network here in Boston, and an even stronger sisterhood nationally with over 1000+ sisters. We're especially excited to host our annual Literacy through Unity week this year! This semester promises to be an exciting one for DPO and we look forward to collaborating with all the organizations in PAAC!

City Year Serve-a-thon Success

A little late, but better late than never!

THANK YOU to everyone who helped out with this year's City Year Serve-a-thon on Saturday May 22, 2010. About 16 people served on the AAC team. Together, we helped rejuvenate a park in East Boston. Half the team painted the tennis/squash court, while the other half painted the railings. It was tons of fun, and everyone there had a great time. Thanks again! Can't wait for next year!

We hope everyone's Summer is going well, whether you are in classes, co-op or vacation!

PAAC is currently planning for our yearly retreat and our meetings for next year.

For those of you who do not know us, we are the new Co-Chairs for 2010-2011:

Andy is a senior majoring in Accounting and Finance, from Hamilton, NJ. He has been involved with the Asian-American community since freshman year. He has been different positions on ASU's eboard since Sophomore year, serving as President ths past year. Outside of PAAC, he is the Treasurer of the NU Swim Club. He enjoys cooking, reading, and eating. Andy looks forward to an exciting year and cannot wait to help lead PAAC to its most successful year, yet!

Katey is a fifth year physical therapy major with a minor in psychology from Long Island, NY. Since her freshman year at Northeastern, Katey has been involved with Barkada & this upcoming year will mark her 4th year on their e-board. This past year, she served as Barkada's President. She enjoys running, cupcakes, and penguins. Katey is super excited to help lead PAAC on an amazing year!

'09-'10 Reflection

Hi PAAC!

So with finals week well under way, the end of the year has arrived, and we want to take some time to reflect on this great year. It's been an amazing journey, starting from the summer retreat all the way to Inspir(Asian) this past Saturday! PAAC has grown immensely this past year and it wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and dedication from each of the 8 student groups, the at-large representatives Cindy and Rachel, our program advisor Julie Kirschner, and of course, Delia and Van.

This year, PAAC was a recipient of the Husky Leadership Award for Organizational Excellence! This is the very first time PAAC as a whole has won an award at the NU Student Life Awards. Individual groups of PAAC have been recipients of various awards in the past, but it's amazing to see that PAAC was honored with this award as one entity. It just goes to show just how far we have gotten as a community here on campus, and the potential PAAC has in future years. As we mentioned at Inspir(Asian), this award is not a reflection of us co-chairs; more so, it's a reflection of all the leaders that make up the PAAC community. Congrats to PAAC!

PAAC Heritage Bowl Winners!

Hi Readers!

We wanted to thank everyone for helping to make NU's Asian American Heritage Week a great success! It was wonderful to see everyone getting together to celebrate through the many events that were planned. Thank you to all the organizations that contributed to the week.

PAAC Heritage Bowl on Friday night was a success! It was an intense battle between all teams, but team Barkada (for lack of a better team name, since no names were thought of for this year =P) came in first with a total score of 673. Team KASA 1 came in a close second at 657, while team KASA 2 finished in the top 3 at 602.

Also, congrats to the highest scoring individuals: Inho (KASA 2)- 170, Vipul (UTSAV)- 169, & SK (KASA 1)- 161.

And the lowest scorers too: ... just kidding.

Thank you all for coming out, we hope you enjoyed PAAC's 3rd annual bowling tournament as much as we did.

Just quick update on PAAC happenings.

Last week, PAAC went on its winter mini-retreat: ROCK CLIMBING! It was a great morning/afternoon of getting to know the council through climbing activities, especially for the new council members this spring 2010.

Hey Readers!

We want to congratulate the 8 Pan Asian American Council groups for a successful fall semester! We can't believe it's winter break now, and right around the corner is the start of the busy spring. Get pumped! There's a lot in store for the council and the PAAC community, including a rock climbing retreat, the annual bowling tournament, Asian American Heritage Week (February 15-20) events, Celebr(asian), and much much more.

A big thank you to all the PAAC representatives that have put in so much effort in helping to make this past semester a great one. We couldn't have done it without you guys! Keep up the momentum- we'll definitely need some team work to get through the spring =).

Also! We would LOVE to to hear your thoughts on how this past semester was with PAAC, what we did well on and what we can improve. If anyone has anything they'd like to share with us, we encourage you to e-mail us at NUPAAC@gmail.com.

1. Barkada's "Tune Out the Typhoon" Benefit Concert

In light of Typhoon Ondoy and other storms that have ravaged the Philippines, NU Barkada will be hosting a benefit concert in afterHOURS this Saturday, November 21, from 7-9 PM.

2. PAAC's 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Potluck!

The Pan Asian American Council (PAAC) hosts our second annual potluck! Sunday, November 22, 5:30-7:30pm in the ISSI Lounge (4th floor Ell Hall).

Please bring a dish to share with everyone, whether it's an appetizer, entree, or dessert!

This year, each group will have the chance to submit an entree and dessert in the potluck competition. Judges will comprise of one representative from each group plus the PAAC at-large representatives, and will judge dishes based on taste, presentation, and creativity.

Which group will take the throne at this very first PAAC cook-off? Come and find out! Don't miss out on some great food and a chance to catch up with your fellow PAAC friends before Thanksgiving break.

Happy November! Thanksgiving break is just around the corner, and soon after, it'll be the end of the Fall Semester. But don't worry, there's still plenty of things lined up for PAAC:

1. TASTE OF MGC

Tonight, Thursday 11/5, 6:30-9:00pm, Ballroom

Our friends from Pi Delta Psi, Kappa Phi Lambda, and Delta Phi Omega are some of the hosts of the Northeastern University Multi-Greek Council's second annual "Taste of MGC". MGC will feature a great variety of foods from all around the world while we present their respective organizations to the Northeastern Community. Want to Learn more about us? 2. KAMAYAN FILIPINO CULTURE SHOW

Saturday, 11/7, 7:00-9:00pm, Blackman Auditorium, $3 NU/$5 Non-NU

Barkada and District One celebrates its 16th year with its annual fall show, Kamayan. Kamayan, which literally means “to eat with our hands” in Filipino, is an extravagant event held every November that displays the Filipino culture through traditional and modern dance. Kamayan serves to strengthen the everlasting bonds of the member schools and the New England community. This year’s Kamayan will emphasize on past, present, and future cultural heroes of the Phlippines.

3. KASA/VSA SCAVENGER HUNT

Wednesday, 11/11, 10:00-4:00pm, Meet at Marino

Each team will be given a list of clues with places and events that you will have to figure out, find, travel to, and document with a camera. Scoring will be done on a point system - some tasks will be worth more points than others. Whichever team comes back by 3 p.m. with the most points gets our awesome grand prize! Everyone on the winning team will get a prize! Refreshments and smaller prizes will be given to all the other teams so don't worry, there will be something for everyone :)

- Please have at least one person on your team bring a DIGITAL CAMERA. This is how you will capture your proof so it is very important that someone has one! If no one has a camera, someone on our eboard will provide one but please note that there will be a limited number of cameras.
- Also make sure to bring your T-PASS as some places are further away (but all are T accessible!), as well as a BAGGED LUNCH (if you do not want to waste time by stopping to eat in the middle of the hunt).
- Eat a good breakfast before you head out and wear comfortable walking shoes!

PAAC Mixer - October 6th, 2009
Our PAAC Mixer was so successful! Thank you all for coming out and meeting new people! We hope you had fun with all the 8 PAAC groups!

BAASIC - October 10th, 2009
What an intense conference! Thought-provoking workshops, lasting networking, and a crowd-stopping concert, all in one day! It was so exciting to see so many people from all different schools in the Boston area gathered in our very own Curry Student Center!

A Night in Asia - October 16th, 2009
Our lovely PAAC groups along with NUTSA came together to create a night market in the Curry Ballroom. There was fantastic performances from NU Bhangra, Sumie Kaneko, and Woo Ching White Crane Dance Team. Booths of games and food were crowded with people as everyone joined in the fun!

Silk Road Gala - October 17th, 2009
The PAAC reps got together this past Saturday night to help volunteer at ATASK's (Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence) annual benefit dinner! Thank you all for helping us fold paper cranes, as they were all scattered beautifully across the ceiling throughout the night. Thank you to all the volunteers for spending your time for a good cause and for looking fineee! ;)

Teaming up with Asian Pacific Americans for Progress, they came up with a list of 10 schools that exhibit a high level of programming (both academically and in extracurriculars) and general inclusiveness of AAPI students. Hey, Everyone!

Welcome to another amazing year at Northeastern University! We are very excited to see so many new and familiar faces on campus!

Once the year begins, it brings about fun-filled meetings, events, and happenings on campus. On the left sidebar, you can see all upcoming events in the Asian American community for the month of September! Come out and meet the groups of PAAC tonight at Night @ Curry at 6-9pm! If you miss your chance, then come meet us again at the Activities Fair on Thursday during activities period.

The 8 PAAC groups will be having their first general meetings starting next week! You've read about the Presidents during the summer, so now meet them in person, as well as the rest of the E-board, the returning members, and the new members of the groups!

A big THANK YOU to our retreat attendees! During the last weekend of August, representatives from the PAAC groups attended our annual PAAC Retreat! Three days of fun games, workshops, and team building brought together our representatives for an easier transition into the Fall semester. Here's some pictures to recapture our memories:

"Hi Everyone! My name is Aneeqa Islam and I am proud to say that I am this coming year's Co-President of Utsav, the South Asian Organization, along with the beautiful Roshni Mirchandani. I am a third year Pharmacy student minoring in Business Administration. Our annual culture show in the spring, Nataraj, initially drew me in my frehsman year, and with its crazy dance practices, quirky skits, and amazing people, I was hooked! Though pharmacy keeps me busy with the studying, I love to just chill out during my downtime- read, watch some movies, maybe go dancing?! I LOVE to dance, you give me a dance floor and I'm there =)

This organization is all about bringing together those of us who have an appreciation for South Asian culture and traditions. Though this group may be mistakingly thought of as the Indian Club on campus, I myself AM NOT Indian, I am Bengali! Remember: you don't need to be south asian to have a good time with us. I can't wait to meet you all this September!"

I also enjoy soccer, skiing, running, and cheering on Boston sports teams as they lead our city to glory. As such, I have also had the pleasure of being able to be a part of PAAC and have seen the tremendous growth that it has gone through. I was born and raised in San Francisco (NORCAL!!!!) and my heart is still at home in the Bay. I love art in all forms but I am particularly enthralled with fashion, interior design, and I have a new found appreciation for graphic design. Food makes me happy and I love to cook and bake, so if you're lucky, you'll be on the receiving end of my domestic endeavors.

This coming school year I am the president of Delta Phi Omega Sorority the South Asian Interest Sorority on campus. I've been on the executive board of DPO for the past three years and I've been an active participant in UTSAV, Northeastern's South Asian Student Group. I've also participated in UTSAV's annual Nataraj show held in Blackman Auditorium for the past few years as well.

I love hanging out with my friends when I'm not studying in the library (my second home). You'll always find me drinking coffee or some sort of caffeinated beverage as they keep me running....but never an energy drink. I love to explore the city of Boston and do as much as I can in the short time that I will be here.

Richie, president of the Vietnamese Student Association, will kick off this "Meet the Presidents" series.

"Hey Everyone! My name is Richie, and I am a Biology Major. I am an upcoming Middler at Northeastern University, and I am the President of the Vietnamese Student Association. I am also a member and former E-board member of the Asian Student Union. So a little about me: I am of Chow Chow-nese descent with Vietnamese heritage. I studied Wu Shu for about two years, some kickboxing with a friend, and I’m more flexible than the average person ;). My hobbies include working out and listening to music. I am critical about the music I listen to, and appreciate music that feels like art. I enjoy the simple things in life, and I believe that imagination is vital to happiness. After noticing this myself after awhile, I tend to over-explain things I am passionate about, to the dismay of listeners. If I ever do this to you, and you are annoyed, let me know. A big THANK YOU to all those who came out this past Saturday for City Year's Serve-a-thon. The AAC team rolled deep with 20 students! It was awesome to have such a diverse turn out. Together, we were able to help brighten up the Nathan Hale School in Roxbury through various painting (and landscaping for one person!) jobs. Some of the children even got a sneak peek at their newly painted school and were really excited about all the colors! Thank you for spending your Saturday morning/afternoon with us in the heat of the Boston sun =). Looking forward to next year's!

Author Alexandra Chang, Director of Public Programs & Research Manager at the Asian/Pacific/American Institute research center at NYU, definitely knows her art. She has curated exhibitions and written on contemporary art, graffiti, design and architecture, as well as served as the Managing Editor for Art Asia Pacific magazine and Features Editor for amNew York.

This free event will feature a book talk about Asian American Art by three important Asian American artist collectives: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network, Godzookie, and the Barnstormers. The "formation, membership, and artwork" of these post-'90s collectives are highlighted in Envisioning Diaspora, as well as the "core issues of identity politics, aesthetics and diaspora involved in Asian American Art."

R.I.P. Dr. Ronald Takaki

Various sources have confirmed that Dr. Ronald Takaki, at 70 years old, has recently passed away. Dr. Takaki was an activist, professor, scholar, author, and much more. His wisdom and passion could be seen from coast to coast, truly making a mark through his efforts in bridging the gap between people of all races. May his work be carried on by the younger generation today. Dr. Ronald Takaki is truly an inspiration.

In honor of APA Heritage Month, Angry Asian Man has been putting together a list of whom he believes to be the 30 most influential Asian Americans under 30 years old. He's been releasing one individual per day, highlighting the person's work and their influential attributes. Take a moment and check it out HERE. Keep checking back to see who finishes off the list!

Delia & Van recently called to our attention that TIME has released their list of the world's most influential people for 2009. TIME has made this an annual installment since 2004, due to the popularity of the list that was first published in 1999. The list is a compilation of the most influential global figures that have changed the world we live in, dividing the list up into five categories: leaders and revolutionaries, builders and titans, artists and entertainers, heroes and icons, and scientists and thinkers.

It's exciting to see that once again, a number of Asians & Asian Americans have made it onto the list. (However, TIME does make an effort to address that these people are the world's most influential, whether in a good or bad way. Our excitement, of course, only applies to those who have done positive work). Such figures include Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam, who is working to mitigate the problem of human sex trafficking. Others include Chinese-born Jack Ma, leader of one of the world's biggest online international trading businesses. Check out the entire list here and see if you can spot the other Asian/Asian Americans that made it in the top 100!

PAAC is BACK!

Hello and welcome to the first ever PAAC Blog! One of our goals this year is to connect the general body members to the PAAC community. Here, this one-stop shop will provide information to everyone about upcoming events, Asian American news/issues, and weekly happenings with PAAC!

What better way to connect the community than to announce that it is Asian Pacific-Islander American Heritage Month! Yay! This month-long celebration captures and highlights the impact of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in America. The month of May was chosen because of two important anniversaries: May 7, 1843 was the immigration of the first Japanese to United States and May 10, 1869 marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad constructed by mostly Chinese laborers. Go out into your community and find various events held during APA Month!

PAAC DOES: COMMUNITY SERVICE! Do you want to give back? Then come join the Northeastern University Asian American Center Team at the 2009 City Year Boston Serve-a-thon! On Saturday, May 30th, kicking off at Government Center, the AAC Team will join 1,000 committed volunteers to:

-Transform schools, playgrounds, and community centers.
-Fundraise to support the young leaders of City Year Boston - dedicated 17-24 year olds who have committed 10 months of their lives to providing full- time community service in the schools, after-school programs, and community organizations - as they make a difference in lives of Boston children.

3) Read and accept the waiver
